The origin of Mother’s Day

At first, we will talk about the history of this day. Mother’s Day isn’t the first celebration for the mother. For thousands of years from ancient to modern times, we have had many traditional ceremonies related to mothers and motherhood. You may have heard about Mother Nature, the mother god Rhea, mother of Jesus, Godmother, or Mother Mary Teresa, for instance.

The day of mothers or Mother’s Day was initiated in the early 20th century by Anna Reeves Jarvis. She was a famous peace activist. In 1905, after her mother died, she thought about a day to honor her mother and all mothers in this world. To Anna, a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”.

Mother’s Day was also established for peace. Anna and other peace activists used this holiday to call upon mothers all over the world to band together and promote the “amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace”.

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908. But, it was only recognized as an official local holiday in the U.S in 1911. Three years after that, a proclamation signed by Woodrow Wilson designated Mother’s Day as a national holiday. After that, the Day of Mothers is honored in the United States on the second Sunday in May. We will celebrate the next Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9, 2021.

Nowadays, many other ceremonies for family members, including Father’s Day, Siblings Day, and Grandparents’ Day … are also observed as a complement to Mother’s Day.
